COLEUS VARIETIES for the 2012 SEASON

The handful of plantsmen still pretending to disdain COLEUS simply have not caught up with the Victorian gardeners! For those still uncomfortable with the "C" word, simply announce that you collect Solenostemon scutellarioides cultivars--keeping in touch with current nomenclature. Millenium fashion embraces brilliant color & delicate detail from shocking tattoos to detailed needlework. The Coleus & their Plectranthus kin allow many choices between these two extreme poles from the punk brash to the shyly subtle--a point substantiated by a ramble though our Coleus Photo Gallery on the Internet at http://www.rareplants.com/gallery2.html. Or refer back to your old copy of Fine Gardening for color photos. We can send you a selection of types for standards, for golden (or red or purple) hues, for baskets, for brilliant borders in sun or shade, for windowboxes or imposing urns.

For the following two collections, tell us if bedding, basket, standards, or topiary fills your Victorian urge to order a passel of these glitzy guys.

99108 COLEUS CRAZE COLLECTION I: Tell us if bedding, basket, standards, or topiary fills your Victorian urge to order a passel of these glitzy guys. 5 plants @ merely PRICE: $15.00

19030 COLEUS: RAINBOW FOLIAGE FOR CONTAINERS AND GARDENS. New and wonderful book. There is no way that the Glasshouse Works could not offer this book! Coleus are our love!! By Ray Rogers. Photographs by Richard Hartlage. Coleus are no longer your grandmother's parlor plants. Favorites during the Victorian era, these plants have made a dramatic comeback with a dazzling variety of leaf color, shape, and pattern. No other plant is so easy to grow and propagate. Their sumptuous colors and tough constitution make coleus ideal both as attention-getting focal points and as complements to other foliage or flowering plants. In this lavishly illustrated volume, expert plantsman Ray Rogers offers equal parts of design inspiration and practical advice. The book contains 404 full-color photographs and presents 225 cultivars in the encyclopedia section, which is organized along the lines of plant habit and leaf shape/color. Three major chapters present the ins and outs of culture, propagation, and problems we might encounter along the way. Other chapters cover history, designing with coleus, coleus in containers and in the garden in general, and sporting and reversion. $ 29.95 plus $ 4.50 shipping.

An excerpt from this book: "While the skeptics and unbelievers would answer this question with, "What? There's such a thing as a good coleus?", any coleophile worth his or her salt appreciates which characteristics set a given coleus above another. Perhaps the most important quality of a good coleus is its "set and forget" nature (thanks to Vern Ogren of Color Farm for this catchy term): plant it and enjoy it without needing to make a constant fuss over it. Of course any plant deserves to receive sound horticultural treatment from its caretaker, with at least some thought given to its selection, function, and placement in the garden; adequate site preparation; appropriate amounts of water and fertilizer; and protection from the elements, insects, diseases, and the like."

Advisory for Spring 2012 Coleus Shipping.

We no longer can accept rush orders especially going to the Far South and the Florida area for Spring delivery unless you understand that our Greenhouses are in the North and we have to wait until crops mature. We do not have the same climate as Florida! We try to get Coleus shipped starting around the first of May each year. If you want your Coleus shipped by early May, then we recommend 1) giving us a couple subsititues, 2) allowing us on large coleus orders to backorder if we need to, or 3) ordering one of our fabulous Coleus Collections! If you order our Collections, this gives us the ability to ship your order earlier with a lot of our best and sturdiest Coleus, our choice. We are far enough north that we cannot get some coleus into the rooting stage until late April or early May. We try to ship from our greenhouses all year, but weather does play a big part in our crops. Some plants are shipped at the best time for that item. If by chance you receive your order in early June, you will be surprised by how much these plants will grow in just a few short weeks. Don't forgert you can always correspond by phone or email with us concerning order status. Our email address and our Toll Free Numbers are given on the Order Confirmation letter as well as on our site.

Not for the faint of heart. Best tall red for bedding in midwest. Even though the spelling is different, the "Tobosco" people wanted us to change the name. We are thus giving preference to its alternate name. Please note that this is the same plant which we have sold for years.

55630 COLEUS HYBRIDUS NIGHT SKIES [STARRY NIGHT] LAB GH PRICE: $ 3.50 Dark purpled leaves with umber tones strewn with lemon gold starry dots. Low statured, small featured enough for small containers. Also popular as a winter greenhouse foliage star.

56703 COLEUS HYBRIDUS NOONDAY MOON LAB TGH PRICE: $ 7.25 Giant furled and ruffled violet backed leaves with an amazing "Hippo Hide" surface of roiled chocolate pink clay tones. An unsolicited reaction: "Ain't none too normal lookin" . . . Due to the extreme foliage, we recommend that you grow this Ken Frieling hybrid in a greenhouse or conservatory in very bright light. Thanks to Durrell Nelson for backup on this when our stock seemed threatened. Collectors will not tolerate any separation from this overwrought prima donna.

23746 COLEUS HYBRIDUS NORMA JEAN LAB TGH PRICE: $ 7.75 Wide lime speckled leaves turn a complicated lilac pink with a distinct coppery flow in full sun--definitely smolders, and does perform well outdoors, although can be difficult as is its pollen parent, 'Noonday Moon.'

Think Shakespeare.

23753 COLEUS HYBRIDUS PARROT JARGON LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.75 Wide bright basil green leaves with deep burgundy red centers accented with bold pinkish red herringbone veins radiating out--the whole splashed dried blood red and straw yellow. Busy designs betray 'Purple Pumpernickle' heritage. New for 2012 .

42330 COLEUS HYBRIDUS PENNEY [HYB] LAB CGH HP PRICE: $ 2.50 Unique foliage: triangular leaves with wide scallops are solid pale copper-olive veined magenta from the center; perfect complement to all other colors. A Vern Ogren hybrid making a perfect foil for hotter colors in your collection, as well as self-branching into a low wide pyramid attractive in any urn or windowbox where, if in full sun, the new foliage emerges a very fashionable hue of bleached wheat. Ever so Martha.

51744 COLEUS HYBRIDUS PERILLA MAGILLA LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.25 Marketed as a Perilla -- but seems a Coleus with great heat tolerance: square purple stems' color bleeds into veins with white flames roughed pink and lavender chevrons on a base of rugose John Deere Green blushed cocco purple. Eye catching.

43143 COLEUS HYBRIDUS PERILLA WARFARE LAB TGH PRICE: $ 3.75 A very dark chocolate toned sport of 'Perilla Magilla' with the same habit and vigor of the original. Anyone suspect a Chris Baker name here? New for 2012 .

51724 COLEUS HYBRIDUS PETER WONDER [HYB] LAB CGH HP PRICE: $ 5.25 Unique and beautiful hicolor plant--a pink and cream version of 'Stunnng' from Jaldety Nursery with a dazzling frothy look. Looks far to delicate to be the easy reliable outdoor performer it is.

55599 COLEUS HYBRIDUS PINEAPPLE PRINCE LAB TGH HP PRICE: $ 3.25 Frieling hybrid with large metalic bronzy gold leaves with faint magenta veins which echo the rose magenta underleaf; strong statured for topiary. Seems to have become the standard choice of designers needing a reliable strong splash of golden ochre with a buttery saturation in full sun.

41092 COLEUS HYBRIDUS PINEAPPLE QUEEN [HYB] LAB CGH HP PRICE: $ 4.25 Traditional cultivar for standards: heavily textured lime- gold leaves with deep maroon petioles; seldom blooms. Easy.

53726 COLEUS HYBRIDUS PINEAPPLE TART LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Golden lime leaves with pale flame on purple stems widely arching. Easy culture. New for 2012 .

66911 COLEUS HYBRIDUS PINK HALO LAB TGH PRICE: $ 6.00 Strong upright habit boldly presents the rumpled olive toned leaves with ornate purple veins and a bright pink central embossed area. Quite a looker while using the very most traditional Coleus colors--very impressive as a standard.

43125 COLEUS HYBRIDUS PINK HEARTTHROB LAB TGH PRICE: $ 5.25 Wide chocolate umber leaves fading to rich olive edges with dramatic wide central bright pink flame which shades into pale lilac in fall temps. Frieling hybrid with wide habit & strong substance. New for 2012 .

58411COLEUS HYBRIDUS PLAY WITH FIRE LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.50 Progeny of 'Red Ulrich' and thus vigorous, with stout stems cloaked with multitudes of deeply crennate rosy bronze leaves with central lemon and rose medallions and a liberaly strewing of rusty bronze highlights. New for 2012 .

55954 COLEUS HYBRIDUS PLUM FROST LAB TGH HP PRICE: $ 4.00 Downer's sport of 'Purple Emperor' adds a rich nile green to the center of each elaborately crested black purple leaf-- will morph to purple olive center colors during intense heat. Much easier to grow than the old rigidly upright (and typcially seldom branching) 'Purple Emperor.' Always among the top ten most reordered every year.

58333 COLEUS HYBRIDUS PRIVATE DANCER LAB TGH PRICE: $ 5.50 Wide golden leaves with lime highlights strewn with maroon sprinkles, carmine splashes, and violet slashes. Big boned recent Frieling hybrid yet to be trialed by northern growers.

41096 COLEUS HYBRIDUS PURPLE DUCKFOOT [SPECIES?] LAB CGH HP PRICE: $ 4.00 Compact dwarf globes of tiny purple short-lobed web-foot leaves tightly overlapping on self-heading stems; non-blooming mini excellent for light gardening or outdoor bedding edger. Called "Mars Coleus" on East Coast, this is a perfect addition to any urn, windowbox, or patio container (some customers spot it among their Hosta beds to great effect); moreover, an excellent winter performer in the hobby greenhouse or sunny indoor windowsill.

41093 COLEUS HYBRIDUS PURPLE EMPEROR [HYB] LAB CGH HP PRICE: $ 5.50 Highly fluted, crested solid black-purple foliage. This is the traditional classic for black foliaged standards because very seldom branches at all. For wide branching foliage of this color, see 'Othello' and 'Dark Star' which do not require staking; a more vigorous sport is 'Plum Frost,' offered above. But for you purists out there, this is the original, and it is grand.

55634 COLEUS HYBRIDUS RED COAT LAB GH PRICE: $ 4.50 Crimson red leaves bordered with bright yellow ochre. Most dramatic contrast in any border. More cranberry red (in full sun) than 'Defiance,' which we no longer propagate (for tends to split as ages); 'Red Coat' one of the basics used by many public display gardens for a carpet of carmine.

55693 COLEUS HYBRIDUS RED RUFFLES LAB CGH PRICE: $ 4.25 Rose red leaves with chablis veins emphatically enhanced by the lime rimmed fluted & lobed margins--heirloom with wide self branching habit. An heirloom variety with delicate appearance, yet a relatively vigorous performer in light or deep shade. We have noted that plants offered at some of the big block garden centers under this name are acutally 'Stunning,' which has similar ruffling but quite different coloring. (Parenthetically, this is a great companion with 'Stunning' as they've similar ruffling and habits.)

66959 COLEUS HYBRIDUS RED ULRICH LAB TGH PRICE: $ 3.25 Excellent potential for standards as the striking square maroon stems are fastigate, cloaked with dark cocoa purple & scarlet sienna leaves frilling out from a central violet medallion; edged in true bullfrog green; excellent hight in an urn with very bright, yet feathery fastigate appearance. We do still maintain the old heirloom 'Ulrich' in the collections, but feel that this sport which was selected here in Stewart is a far superior form in color & in vigor. Will perform with panache even in less than perfect conditions.

32507 COLEUS HYBRIDUS RELIGIOUS RADISH LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.50 Rich reds overlaid with maroon-chocolates radiating from the center; probably an old heirloom selection as has the colors of 'Crazy Quilt' & is used extensively in Canadian bedding (yes: tolerates the first fall chills rather well). Absolute favorite of many of our customers as the clone we have selected and reselected forms a richly saturated warm colored blanket in the border or container, as it self branches readily to form a low "shrub" of very wide habit. Has become rather infamous from coast to coast for its richly saturated colors.

23765COLEUS HYBRIDUS RICKY ROCOCCO LAB TGH PRICE: $ 10.00 Seriously fabulous. Big rangy stalks draped with dramatic wide down turned golden lime rumpled leaves with central scarlet and umber designs and rhubarb violet rimmed crennations. Frieling's overstated primma donna. New for 2012 .

49475 COLEUS HYBRIDUS RISKY SISSY LAB TGH PRICE: $ 6.00 Looks very very odd, but of stong constitution. Big boned yellow mustard leaves with random eggplant purple flecks, dashed with lilac spotches. Obviously a Frieling hybrid noted for its elongated dramatic leaves jutting out imperiously from angled, then somewhat weeping stems. .

59408 COLEUS HYBRIDUS ROARING FIRE LAB TGH PRICE: $ 3.75 Bold and beautiful: deep red foliage emerging with purple blush and carmine highlights with a dramatic chevron of brash ochre--bold, yet the elegantly elongated leaves give this self mounding winner a lacy flamboyant aspect.

53724 COLEUS HYBRIDUS SANGUINE SASS LAB TGH PRICE: $ 5.25 Certainly the "Saucy Tart" of the Frieling hybrids with arching flounced leaves, deeply crennate edged, with shameless highlights of rich burgundy red on olive with pink splashes; showy upright habit.

51761 COLEUS HYBRIDUS SATANIC EMBERS FF03 LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.25 Fabulous. Slim upright eggplant purple stems cloaked with furled fantastic small purplish umber and damask violet leaves highlighted with a burning glow of orange sienna, fading to chili reds and sultry carmine. Frieling's lucky cross of 'Dragon's Claw' x 'Noonday Moon' resulted in what several garden clubs decided must be a summer blooming Poinsettia! Also quite successful as a winter pot plant (if you can give it bright light or a lightgarden spot) and a natural for indoor litegardens as the dimensions are quite compact, the foliage reliably congested in a rumple of hues. Has been very popular with Asian visitors to the gardens.

55604 COLEUS HYBRIDUS SATURN LAB TGH HP PRICE: $ 3.25 Very bold, very distinctive: The lime-gold center is vividly contrasted with the wide dark red border, then barely echoed by the lime tipped scalloped edge. Good in a basket for the "gold medallion" sections give a stained glass effect; excellent self branching wide habit. Not as vigorous as its various progeny, such as 'Yin & Yang,' 'Sloppy Painter,' etc.

49476 COLEUS HYBRIDUS SAVVY LAB TGH PRICE: $ 5.50 "Optical Delusion Coleus" From a distance, seems to be an orange sheened tall exclamtion mark; but close us the violet stems hold purplish leaves suffused with dusky copper ochre blush. Cupped edges deep cantalope. Quite wonderful, dramatic

55618 COLEUS HYBRIDUS SCHIZOPHRENIA LAB PRICE: $ 4.50 Brilliant slashings of violet, carmine, & carmel on strong widely branched shrub which reaches impressive porportions in a very short period of time. Possibly same as 'Spectrum' The four images listed with this entry show the plant at different times of the year, a very changeable cultivar!

51926 COLEUS HYBRIDUS SEDONA LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.25 Brassy wide branching charmer; the rusty red foliage gives a orange glow in full sun; remains russett even in shade. Considered a sport of 'Freckles.' Named for the red rock cliffs of Arizona, with their sunset blond hues. Fussy as to site as the foliage is more thin and more easily damaged than most hybrids.

23752 COLEUS HYBRIDUS SHINY SHOES [HORT] LAB HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.50 The "Black Patent Leather Coleus" without argument. Quite petite seashell leaves with crimped edges are unabashedly shiny black eggplant purple, thick substanced. Strong stems; holds winter foliage on strong stems; no flowering observed.

55528 COLEUS HYBRIDUS SHOCKING PINK LAB CGH PRICE: $ 3.25 The rusty lilacs, dusky limes, & chocolates suddenly turn a bright silk undies pink in full sun quite startling as the older foliage develops unripened pumpkin hues. Best known as 'Texas Parking Lot'; also sold as 'Alabama Sunset' & 'Bellingrath pink"; has become one of the basic bedding plants for sunny borders, as evidenced by its multiple and ever expanding portfolio of names. Not the easiest colors to match with other foliage in the urn arrangement.

23732COLEUS HYBRIDUS SLOPPY PAINTER LAB TGH HP PRICE: $ 4.00 Wide central golden amber and lime centers outline with a reddish coppery band bleeding into a pumpkin blushed green edge. Much wider and faster growing than 'Saturn' mom.

59418 COLEUS HYBRIDUS SMALLWOOD'S DRIVE LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 A forest of slim purple stems cloaked with small feathery shell foliage: small arched quilted leaves of bronzy butter speckled with ochre, rose and purple--flounced to accent the cute scalloped edges. Strong; a lower voltaged 'Satanic Embers.'

42235 COLEUS HYBRIDUS SNOWFLAKE [HYB] LAB HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Rich maroon novelty leaves with slim Nile green edgings are most elaborately crested & branched from central fingered wavy segments--from Vern Ogden.

51779 COLEUS HYBRIDUS SO OBVIOUS LAB TGH HP PRICE: $ 6.00 Dour reddish mahogany leaves with striking herringbone (veins) patterns of pink and rose, all framed by crennations tipped bright mint. Seems tolerant of less than perfect environment even on a window sill. Frieling's cross of "Kingwood Rose' x 'Screaming Raspberry.'

23760 COLEUS HYBRIDUS SONGBIRD LAB TGH PRICE: $ 5.75 Much branched ocher and raspberry mounds of many small short leaves cutely fluted, of raspberry and rich chocolate with dramatic red rose central flames.

51941 COLEUS HYBRIDUS SORCERER LAB HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.25 Fabulous "Black Coleus" with thickly substanced foliage saturated deepest purple.

53185 COLEUS HYBRIDUS SPARKLE PLENTY LAB HP TGH PRICE: $ 3.50 Strong upright much branched stems hold a forest of smallish diamond outlined wasabi green leaves slashed with sangria magenta and speckled with pale wheat and mustard; in high light the veins are colored a pale chernoble ash tone. A vigorous easily self-branching upright Frieling hybrid which blends stronger brash colors together in a mixed planting or container assortment.

55705 COLEUS HYBRIDUS SPARKLER LAB CGH PRICE: $ 2.75 Very deeply cut, highly fluted leaves of olive & gold highlighted with pastel lemon; each elaborately fingered leaf rimmed deep purple when grown in full sun. Always popular as gives a fab very 3-D lacy effect in exposed conditions.

56542 COLEUS HYBRIDUS SQUIGGY LAB TGH PRICE: $ 5.00 Short branchlets nervously populated with multitudes of small wriggling ochre and lance leaves closely held; eventually forms a tidy mound appearing to just have experienced combustion. Often yearns to be near 'Lenny.'

53165 COLEUS HYBRIDUS ST. CHARLES LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.50 Good topiary quality stout erect stems topped with extravagantly fingered rosey toned frilled, lacy leaves of pink, purple and rose red, margined olive green. A winner.

66714 COLEUS HYBRIDUS STORMY WEATHER LAB CGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Heavily branched purple stemmed selection with small frilled scalloped leaves of agressive ochre dappled gold & blood red with deep purple splotches; tends to be tall statured. Similar to 'Solar Storm.'

53182COLEUS HYBRIDUS SUNSTROKE LAB TGH HP PRICE: $ 7.50 Giant golden leaves dappled straw blond along the veins; cassis blushed stems. A massive presence derived from a Frieling cross of 'Japanese Giant' and 'Amazon.' Not advised for the timid grower or the miniature garden.

66936 COLEUS HYBRIDUS SUPER DUCKFOOT LAB TGH PRICE: $ 3.50 Deeply lobed & relobed leaves larger than 'Inky Fingers,' with citron green base splotched rose, pistachio, & freckled gold--very vigorous in any setting. And yes, we know, this bears no resemblence to the other mini "duckfoot" types--just a case of Texas marketing gone wild.

51801COLEUS HYBRIDUS SWALLOWTAIL [GOLONDRINA] LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.25 Narrow elongated yellow lime leaves with a central pale pale rose center with purple & coffee toned traceies; the margins are elaborately ruffled and fluted. As the many branchlets interstice a stunning pyramid of lacy froth develops.

69040COLEUS HYBRIDUS SWOON LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Puckered compact foliage with each leaf centered with a lime guacomole medallion on a darker pecan green surface darker at the crennate caramel margins. Odd Frieling creature with veins of chocolate and splashes of carmine. Low stature.

58353 COLEUS HYBRIDUS THE FLUME LAB TGH PRICE: $ 5.00 Self branching dwarf habit with congested slim sabre leaves of burgundy and gold with showy pink centers. Strong growing; excellent container plant, forming a woody base in time. Introduced by Proven Winners.

55527 COLEUS HYBRIDUS THE LINE LAB TGH PRICE: $ 3.75 A tall elegant pyramidal masterpiece from Doug Ruhren w/ golden ochre elongated flame leaves with only the central vein bright magenta-purple; this is the one Martha Stewart uses in her container planting segment regullarly replayed on T.V. channels.

55536 COLEUS HYBRIDUS THUMBELINA LAB CGH PRICE: $ 5.50 Very petite: tinsy pea green rounded, puckered lf segments with touches of chocolate purple. Just too too cute . . . most popular with lite gardeners.

67000 COLEUS HYBRIDUS TILT A WHIRL LAB TGH PRICE: $ 3.75 Distinctive furled circular leaves of muted heather to mahogany with zagged lime edges and feathered centers; always a great color contrast to the golden skirted 'Diane's Gold' and (along with 'Killer Klown') the final perfect flouncy companion for 'Flirtin' Skirts'!

41100 COLEUS [PLECTRANTHUS] THYRSOIDES LAB HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.00 "Flowering Coleus" Attractive much-branched compact shrub covered with spikes of indigo-blue flowers mid-winter. Easy hobby greenhouse plant as popular with growers today as with Victorian gardeners for the impressive display of mid winter blossoms. Sometimes this is classified as a Plectranthus. Very beautiful, very easy to grow--but remember this is a winter performer.

55572 COLEUS [PLECTRANTHUS] AMBOINICUS LAB CGH HP PRICE: $ 3.75 Called "Cuban Oregano" or "Indian Borage" for its multiple culinary uses in Mexico & West Indies, although believed to be a native of SE Asia where its handsome foliage is used for bronchitis, asthma, headaches, burns, & scorpion sting; also the leaves can be used in tea, or to scent your laundry. Certainly the most attractive hanging basket plant we know of which is also handy to treat the results of any random misadventures you may have with your pet scorpion!

42354 COLEUS [PLECTRANTHUS] AMBOINICUS OCHRE FLAME LAB CGH HP PRICE: $ 4.75 Arched stems weighed down under the weight of the succulent pelted paired leaves, each with a central pale lime flare on rich avacado green, margined with mint green crenulations; a "Spanish Thyme" with lavender-pink blossoms during the winter. Used to punch up Caribbean cooking and to treat a wide range of symptons in Asian medicine.

42086 COLEUS [PLECTRANTHUS] AMBOINICUS VARIEGATED LAB CGH HP PRICE: $ 4.75 "Margined Spanish Thyme" or "Banded Indian Borage" Heavy succulent stems arch under the weight of the showy pairs of fleshy crenate leaves bordered in bright white. New aromatic shoots in tropical culinary use, as "Cuban Oregano"--Astounding as a hanging basket subject; splendid cascading from urns and windowboxes. Excellent for drama in the winter greenhouse as well because quite reliably evergreen in nature. (In other words, you need this.)
