20566ACHIMENES GLORY [HYB] GES CGH PRICE: $ 4.50Vigorous growing, poducing many red blushed hot pink fls with citron yellow throats. Winter dormant. Thanx: Ullman of Alum Bridge. Due to long dormancy we will not ship until new growth is apparent.

20572ACHIMENES PINK NIGHTY [HYB] GES CGH HP PRICE: $ 4.75 Pointed, scallop-edged dark leaves; masses of clear luminescent bright rose pink fls over a long season. Long winter dormancy.

20008 ACHIMENES RIO RITA [HYB] GES HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.75 Semi-trailing "Nut Orchid" with compact habit topped with double rose-pink scalloped flowers which remain open longer than the single cultivars. An excellent Worley hybrid with dark deep green leaves -- tends to have a much shorter dormancy cycle than the species types.

51289 AGAPANTHUS AFRICANUS GETTY WHITE AMARYL CGH PRICE: $ 10.00 Somewhat compact glaucous foliaged selection of the "Nile Lily" with heads of ivory white flowers emerging from the attractive leathery leaf fans; must reach maturity before blooming.

50117 AGAPANTHUS ELAINE [HYB] AMARY CGH HP PRICE: $ 6.00 Vigorus growing patented deep blue 8" wide fl heads on thick stems above the dark green upright 2' foliage fans; typically starts heavy flowering period 3 weeks later than most when grown outdoors in the deep South--seems to bloom with the others for us in northern greenhouses. Most certainly easier to flower than any of the longer-term species.

51086 AGAPANTHUS ORIENTALIS PETER PAN AMARY CGH HP PRICE: $ 6.00 "Dwarf Lily of the Nile" With 18" strap leaves; blue flower heads, more lilac-toned than most of the large species forms. Very reliable bloomer if allowed to become potbound--certainly the easiest for houseplant culture. Very popular compact form which some South African nurserymen suggest is more correctly an unusually floriferous selection of Agapanthus praecox minimus.

SHIELD PLANTS (ALOCASIA) for the 2010 SEASON

.

The SHIELD LEAF PLANTS are succulently stemmed (seldom but sometimes tuberous) Aroids responding successfully to regularly moist and humid growing conditions combined with friable soil and bright (not necessarily direct) light. If accidentally chilled or dried out, fear not: just expect this to trigger any Alocasia to enter a dormant cycle. If you like these dramatic creatures, also investigate their kith & kin, the Xanthosomas and the bog loving Colocasias & Steudnera . . . even check their flashy Caladium cousins. Several have become important "Summertime Tropicals" for many northern gardeners in recent years, especially A. odora, A. plumbea nigra, and 'Golden Delicious,' all offered below:
99153 ALOCASIA COLLECTION (FIVE PLANTS) We can easily tailor a collection of these Alocasias for you. Let us know if you will be growing these indoors under lights, in a greenhouse, or outdoors in a bog or in a container so that we can send ones that will thrive in your growing conditions. Because of the low cost of this collection not all plants will be mature; sizes will vary, but you will get a fine grouping. Please let us know if you want these to be bog growers (in the South or in the North) or standard pot types. PRICE: $44.00

30090 ALOCASIA AMAZONICA POLLY ARAC HP PRICE: $ 15.00 "Scalloped Elephant Ear" Deep green lacquered leaves with dramatically raised bold white ivory veins which create a mask on the waxed leaves This is a more vigorous form than some species types, typically holding a greater number of leaves per stalk than most.

30095 ALOCASIA CLYPEOLATA [CUPREA GREENBACK] ARAC HP TGH PRICE: $ 8.50 Apple green shield leaves; rapidly forms lovely clumps. Commercially offered as 'Green Shield' plant--lovely, but with the serious drawback that it needs a considerable winter dormancy and thus is not an ideal houseplant or winter greenhouse performer

30093 ALOCASIA CUCULLATA ARAC HP TGH PRICE: $ 8.75 "Giant Ape Plant" "Chinese Taro" An upright Bengal species with small thick waxed pointed leaves veined in relief with dramatic upturned margins. Tolerates cool conditions, maintaining yearround foliage, and thus a reliable container subject; very popular in an aquatic situation. The succulent thick trunk is thinly sliced, chilled, and then quickly deep fried for "Taro Chips" in Asia. Keep this in mind when your plant gets too large for your location!

30094 ALOCASIA CUPREA ARAC TGH PRICE: $ 12.50"Turtle Back" "Copper Taro" Unusually sturdy in the warm house; large wide rippled shield leaves a metallic bluegreen rendered even more dramatic by the maroon purple underleaf--smaller statured than most species. Evergreen if kept quite warm in a humid winter greenhouse.

30107 ALOCASIA LOWII ARGENTEA ARAC TGH HP PRICE: $ 15.00 "Fancy Taro" Bluish green, metallic sheened leaves margined and veined in soft silver. One of the best for the house.

30101 ALOCASIA MACRORHIZA VARIEGATA ARAC TGH PRICE: $ 35.00 "Variegated Taro" Elephant ears dramatically splashed creany to marble white in irregular patterns--no two giant leaves will ever be alike. For the serious collector. Not a reliable winter grower for us (typically retaining only a few winter leaves), but always completely amazing by mid summer. Hard to top for sheer spectacle.

30578 ALOCASIA MARK CAMPELL ARAC TGH PRICE: $ 28.00 Impressive somewhat rounded arrow shaped emerald black leaves (irridescent eggplant purple) with lovely decorative veins--astounding new David Fell hybrid of lowii x nobilis.

30102 ALOCASIA MICHOLITZIANA MAXKOWSKII ARAC TGH PRICE: $ 15.00 "African Mask" Also known as "Freydyk," this plant is a favorite for the summer patio. It makes a great houseplant also. Unlike some other plants in this group it does not go dormant in normal WARM wintertime houseplant conditions--but cool or dry conditions will trigger a dormancy from which it will emerge late winter. Satiny ochre-emerald leaves are held proudly to further display the dramatic chalk white rayed midribs accenting the slightly saggitate shield outlines.

31469 ALOCASIA MICHOLITZIANA VARIEGATED FREYDYK ARAC TGH PRICE: $ 42.00 The velveteen arrow leaves sport dramatic creamy splashes of variegation. Very cold sensitive; expect a winter dormancy period unless kept in warm humid conditions such as a Wardian Case or warm greenhouse. A must for any serious collection of variegated plants.

32115 ALOCASIA ODORA ARAC HP TGH PRICE: $ 10.00 Merely a giant, the "Tree Elephant Ear Plant" from Burma and South China has enormous somewhat succulent leaves dwarfing macrorrhiza on (if you live long enough) thick tall trunks. A very showy young container plant prefering wet feet.

30108 ALOCASIA PLUMBEA NIGRA [ATROPURPUREA] ARAC HP TGH PRICE: $ 15.00 "Black Taro" Elegant polished, blackish purple leaves form handsome specimens; produces clusters of large ivory hood shaped spathes protecting the 8"+ spadix. Very popular addition to the bog garden; trendy color for the urn fancier--especially those designing "Black Gardens." Not to be confused with the smaller, non-glossy "Jet Black Wonder" Colocasia.

88943 ALOCASIA PORTIDORA ARAC TGH HP PRICE: $ 18.00 Impressive upright vase of upturned waxy elongated leaves, each with decorative marginal lobes; clever waxy flowers; we find this more chill tolerate than most species, without a distinct need for dormancy.

30654 ALOCASIA PURPLE PRINCE ARAC TGH PRICE: $ 28.00 Fabulous short waxy arrowhead leaves with striking irridescent purple veins. Outstanding strong growing Fell hybrid.

30199 ALOCASIA SPECIES GOLDEN DELICIOUS ARAC TGH PRICE: $15.00 (Usually COLOCASIA 'Golden Delicious' or 'Chartreuse' in catalogues) Remarkable dramatic yellow "Elephant Ear" dramatic in any setting, whether an urn, a bog, or (in the very deep South) released in any moist area of your garden. Requires full sun and constantly moist soil to maintain good golden ochre tones and reach its impresive stature. We've also offered this more accurately as Xanthosoma aurea 'Lime Zinger' at the end of this section of our website--these are ABSOLUTELY the same plant.

30110 ALOCASIA WENTII [DISCOLOR] ARAC TGH HP PRICE: $ 12.00 Strong petioles hold aloft the thick waxy peltate leaves with bronzy blush accented by thick veins & undulate edges; very vigorous New Guinea "Uhinkii" is undaunted by an exposed site--thus an excellent choide for summer containers in full sun and full breezes..

54554 ALSTROEMERIA PULCHELLA VARIEGATED ALS CGH HH PRICE: $ 6.50 Remarkable "Frosted Peruvian Lily" The cinnamon fls are the final over-the-top gesture by this upright stemmed plant with such brilliantly white tipped foliage. The gradually widening clusters of this most showy Andean have proven winter hardy here in Zone 6 with adequate winter mulch. But most popular with hobby greenhouse growers as it achieves great beauty and vigor in a sunny winter greenhouse, blooming with abandon mid winter.

58420 AMARYGIA NAKED LADY [HYB] AMARY CGH PRICE: $ 25.00 Rare tropical "naked Lady Hybrid" an outstanding bigeneric cross between Amaryllis belladonna and a Brunsvigia species with late summer umbels of showy fragrant funnel shaped blossoms emerging with white petals fading to pink. Strap leaves appear only during the winter.

51008 AMARYLLIS BELLADONA AMARY CGH PRICE: $ 12.00 Received from the USDA as "Amaryllis belladona"--probably Z8 winter hardy: winter distichous strap leaved foliage dies down in summer, followed by nodding rich pink waxy trumpet shaped flower clusters early fall. Not the common winter hardy Lycorus squamiferum, the "Naked Lady" of the midwest. This is the real McCoy--large bulbs are shipped bare root--plant them so that the surface is just barely showing at ground level.

30582 AMORPHOPHALLUS KONJAC [RIVIERI] ARAC TGH PRICE: $ 15.00 "Voo Doo Bulb" or "Umbrella Arum" from SE Asia. Fingered, whorl-crescent lf over purple-spotted petiole (the hollow stalk); fetid liver-purple spathe; edible corms (preparation, however, remains obscure in the literature). Also known as "Devil's Tongue" or "Leopard Palm," this is winter hardy for us here in Z6 in a very protected location in the garden which has perfect drainage to avoid winter rot and a frost line never reaching more than an inch or so; however, the foliage seldom emerges before June as the soil needs to warm considerably in order to initiate the budding. We recommend container culture or winter tuber storage techniques in areas north of the subtropics for real success.

41548 ANREDERA [BOUSSINGAULTIA] CORDIFOLIA BAS HP TGH PRICE: $ 2.00 "Madeira Vine" or "Mignonette Vine" From tuberous roots rise rapidly growing stems with succulent leaves and racemes of heavily fragrant white flowers. Argentina native, thus the tubers are persistent in subtropical zones if below any frost line; in the north, either dig or bring in the container for winter. Nonetheless, always a favorite as a vigorous intensely fragrant windowgarden plant.

65573 ANTHERICUM FRUTICOSUM LIL HP TGH PRICE: $ 10.00 Easily grown caudiform: from swollen surface roots arises a thick succulent trunk topped with a crown of fat strap leaves (not unlike a Dracaena experiencing a bad hair day); finally ending with slim spikes of white starflowers. Eventually quite impressive; very long lived, becoming a handsome member of your caudiform plant collection! Easy houseplant.

30470 CALADIUM ETTA MOORE ARAC TGH HP PRICE: $ 4.75 "Stained Glass Caladium" Elaborately designed thick pink and transparent white "see-through" lance shaped leaves with vivid olive margins. Very low habit--causes much comment. Winter dormant. Available again late Spring or early summer for 2010. This plant has a dormant cycle and we ship plants coming into leaf.

30467 CALADIUM THAI BEAUTY [HYB?] ARAC HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.75. Available again late Spring or early summer for 2010. This plant has a dormant cycle and we ship plants coming into leaf. Fabulous nearly transparent unabashed pink leaves, flared out into a heart with "ears" seemingly bending light through the hunter green and vanilla mosaic of veins if given very bright light and constant moisture and fertilizer--as you can see from the photo, a thousand words cannot touch this flamboyant character. Wow!
CALADIUM COLLECTION

99472 CALADIUM MIXTURE COLLECTION (5 PLANTS) We will aim for unusual foliage for your shaded urn. Sometimes rare species will be included in this group. These will be sent out as potted plantsunless you order early enough for us to send them as dormant bulbs. PRICE: $18.00.

41510 CANNA GENERALIS STRIATUS [BENGAL TIGER] CAN TGH CGH PRICE: $ 10.00 "Bangkok indian Shot" or "Pretoria Canna" Spectacular garden canna cultivar forming dramatic clumps of brightly striped green and butter yellow leaves topped by heads of large orange flowers. Blooms in winter greenhouse as has no real dormancy cycle. We suggest to those interested in research that a quick look in the important tome, "Gardening in india," will prove that C. generalis 'Striatus' was long grown in India before exported to Pretoria where it was "rediscovered" by nurserymen unfamiliar with the specimens already present in the U.S. trade. Henry Ross was wise to resolve the confusion by declaring it to be the remarkable 'Bengal Tiger' it just is.

41952 CANNA INDICA PURPUREA / RED STRIPE [GREENLINE] CAN TGH PRICE: $ 18.00 Remarkable strong clean avacado green leaves with strong deep purplish red parallel chevroned veins suggesting a delicate transparency. Marvelous when grown as a bog subject. Try at the edge of your pool where, if content, it can reach a height of eight feet topped with a cluster of petite brilliantly carmine red blossoms.

31706 CANNA MUSAFOLIA MUS TGH PRICE: $ 22.00 Preposterously sized "Banana Canna" essential in any northern garden attempting a tropical look. From quickly clumping roots giant 15 foot stalks arise with very showy enormous leaves; the "Banana Leaved indian Shot" makes such a dramatic foliar statement that the petite carmine fls make a mere afterthought. Only for the brave. Seems to reach these hights (and even rarely produce the modest pastel carmine blossoms) in the rich soils of northern gardens, while remaining considerably shorter in the Texas and Florida climates. Horticultural gossip suggests this gargantuan originated in Peru. This fantastic performer easily earns its space in any "Tropical Look" garden design.

41509 CANNA ORCHIODES NIRVANA (BANKOK) [HYB] CAN TGH CGH PRICE: $ 15.00 Clumps of cream mottled/variegated foliage topped with heads of bright yellow blossoms with a bold central white stripe; as this beauty has small rhizomes, we prefer not to try to induce any winter dormancy. Called `Trinacria Variegata' in Asia as well as "Bangkok Yellow" and "King of Siam"--appropriate as this obviously popular Canna is belived to have been in Thailand already in 1923. More recently we have noted it appearing as 'Christ's Light' in religious Gulf Coast nurseries and as 'Striped Beauty' in the irreligious glossy color catalogues of midwest nurseries.

55505 CANNA STUTTGART [STRIATA] CAN TGH PRICE: $18.00 Sturdy erect foliage mostly bright white with shades of gray green & dark green topped with small salmon flowers toned orange & pink, with yellowish margins. Brilliant show when grown as a semi-aquatic for usually will not burn in our climate if treated as a bog plant; considered a sport of 'Omega' and more recently, a sport of 'Heliconifolia' with its small apricot blossoms. Whatever. All find this startling beauty to be of great interest as a conservatory or hobby greenhouse subject for its uniquely dramatic foliage year round if indoors. And it was for this excellent indoor performance that the late Bob Hayes (of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden) recommended this beauty when he shared it with us some years ago.

60017 CEROPEGIA LINEARIS WOODII ASC HP TGH PRICE: $ 3.50 "Rosary Vine" or "String of Hearts" Thread-like vine with large "rosary bead" tubercles and small pairs of heart-leaves designed with bright silver surfaces. Dependable tried and true houseplant unless you overwater!

60985 CEROPEGIA LINEARIS WOODII PINK EDGE ASC TGH HP PRICE: $12.00 The remarkeble "Variegated Rosary Vine" with each fleshy heart shaped leaf bordered in creamy pink. Marketed as 'Lady Heart' in Asian nurseries.

40117 CHLOROPHYTUM COMOSUM LIL HP TGH PRICE: $ 2.00 "Spider Plant / Airplane Plant" Glossy green arched leaves; long bloom stems terminat with forks bearing tiny white starflowers, but soon bend with many thick-rooted plantlets vivipariously formed by the tiny blossoms. The basic utterly green, astoundingly vigorous species form which seldom appears in commerce now even though it was used formerly to provide early warning of high salts in water or excessive contamination in air quality by immediately developing browned leaf tips to warn its human companions of environmental problems. It will still be your canary in a cage for your house.

40121 CHLOROPHYTUM MACROPHYLLUM LIL HP TGH PRICE: $ 6.00 Wide rosette of glossy ribbon leaves; club-shaped inflorescenceorescenceorescense of white starry flowers emerging from odd green bracts; one of the giant "Tropic Plantain" without plantlets forming on outarching stolons; however the occassional plantlet emerges on the short stout erect flower spikes as they ripen. This eventually needs a large pot to accommodate the mass of fleshy roots--and, yes, it will probably outlive the lot of us.

31450 COLOCASIA AFFINIS JENNINGSII LAB TGH PRICE: $ 7.00 The shimmery "Black Caladium" with central purple mask between the pale veins of ash silver. Prefers aquatic spot, but successful as regular pot plant, soon forming a colony. Many of you have bought this over the years from us and realize that it has a very long winter dormancy: best left in its container and kept barely moist during this period.

30625 COLOCASIA ESCULENTA ARAC PRICE: $ 5.00 Popular "Elephant Ear" whose giant quilted peltate leaves have always made it a popular accent plant for outdoor beds; the tubers are the source of "Taro."

30182 COLOCASIA ESCULENTA [ANTIQUORUM] FONTANESII ARAC TGH PRICE: $ 15.00 "Elephant taro" Vigorous purple-stemmed elephant-eared leaves of glaucous blue-green. Needs wet feet and warmth. Very effective if situated so the vivid purple raised underveins are highlighted. Tony Avent suggests that the yellowish spathes have a papaya scent. Evergreen in warm greenhouse.

30785 COLOCASIA ESCULENTA CHICAGO HARLEQUIN ARAC GH PRICE: $ 12.00 A form of the regular water Taro with lime green to cream splashes and maculations in the leaf pattern--a tip of the hat to John Jocius for finding and sharing this subtlely variegated, elegant bog gem with the rest of us.

30606 COLOCASIA ESCULENTA ILLUSTRIS ARAC CGH PRICE: $ 12.00 "Imperial Taro" Soft shimmery heart shaped leaves with purple brushings between the veins. Semiaquatic conditions best.

39184 COLOCASIA ESCULENTA JET BLACK WONDER [ETC.] ARAC CGH PRICE: $ 15.00(The correct original name is C. jenkensii 'Uahiapele') THE solidly dusky deep purple leaved taro creating a sensation in the garden & conservatory alike; also sold as 'Cranberry,' & 'Black Magic.' Very happy as a semi-aquatic--will maintain foliage readily in the warm winter greenhouse as long as it is given consistently wet warm feet.

31463 COLOCASIA ESCULENTA MILKY WAY [VARIEGATA] ARA TGH PRICE: $ 25.00 Breathtaking "Variegated Elephant Ear" with big arrowhead leaves lavishly splashed with creamy gray and mottled with white--a snowstorm of confettii. To flourish needs boggish conditions with full light and warm temps.

56812 COLOCASIA ESCULENTA SUNNY SPLASH ARA TGH PRICE: $ 22.00 Elephant ears of milky green with golden lime splashes and freckling. Yinger's inspired name. Seems remarkably like the old cultivar 'Manini Owali'.

31254COLOCASIA ESCULENTA VIOLET/PURPLE STEM ARAC TGH CGH PRICE: $8.00. Dusky purple blushed dramatic arrow shaped leaves held over the showy smoky purple petioles; excellent in water gardens as well as regular containers. Prefers to go dormant mid-winter, even in greenhouse situations.

42900 COLOCASIA EXCALIBUR ARAC TGH HP PRICE: $ 18.00 Beautifully hued pearly gray green "Pink Elephant Ear" leaves produced in thick profusion to create a perfect complement in ever-so-trendy tones to any bold purple foliaged plant. Easily grown also as a semi-aquatic as long as very warm soil temperatures are maintained. This modest sized beauty creates feeding frenzies when our customers spot them. This has also been listed at times as a Caladium.

30633 COLOCASIA KAPO [HORT] AFF. FALAX ARAC HP TGH PRICE: $ 10.00 Charming "Miniature Taro" Small one foot plant with small shield-shaped leaves with dark radiating veins accenting the pink-blushed centers. Nearly evergreen if kept in warmish winter greenhouse avoiding an extended winter dormancy. The same semi-aquatic plant as the one various of you ordered from us years ago as 'Hawai'i Silver Kapo' which was Waimea's name for it. Perhaps will remain the best of the decorative Taros for houseplant and litegardening projects.

31453COLOCASIA NANCYANA NANCY'S REVENGE ARAC TGH CGH PRICE: $ 15.00 Amazing "Starburst Elephant Ear" with new rounded tipped very dark leaves displaying a creany starry center radiating out as the thickly textured leaves mature--beware: this species can nearly reach the massive dimension of Alocasia odora (although the spathes resemble C. esculenta)! To see this is to need it--very popular with hobby greenhouse growers as will produce small more highly colored leaves all winter in full sun than it seems to unfurl in the summer bog's heat--absolutely will not tolerate chill. And the name? Jerry Kranz discovered this in the Caribbean and named it for Nancy McDaniels.

31414COLOCASIA [XANTHOSOMA] MACULATUS ARAC TGH PRICE: $ 15.00 Heavily mottled arrow shaped foliage always stays compact for us; must have moisture and considerable constant warmth for best dramatic show. from Larry Lowman, Ridgecrest Nursery, this resembles a Caladium more than the other taros.

51209 CRINUM AMABILE PURPLE SELECTION AMARY TGH PRICE: $ 18.00 "Giant Red Spider Lily" Broad fleshy upright leaves emerge a rich purplish maroon in a massive whorl gradually fading to coppery violet; the heavy trunk supports giant stalks of richly fragrant violet toned blossom clusters. Impressive! While excellent as a container subject with silvered or golden foliaged plants, this foliar sculpture reaches an impressive performance peak when treated as a bog plant in full sun.

51027 CRINUM ASIATICUM VARIEGATUM AMARY TGH HP PRICE: $ 35.00 "Striped Bengal Lily" Large fleshy sword-like leaves are most liberally streaked white & cream; fragrant clusters of waxy white fls with purpled centers. Striking decorator specimen for the warm greenhouse--drops roots if soil is cool. Certainly the easiest and most dramatic for the hobby greenhouse; equally wonderful if brought out into your outdoor display pool for the summer (but does best if not submerged). Unlike most variegated Crinum cultivars, if given adequate warmth, this one NEVER drops foliage in a cycle of dormancy or in a fit of stubbornness, but incrementally adds more and more fantastically white striped succulent leafs to create a magnificent specimen.

51152 CRINUM JAPONICUM SHIMA-IRE AMARY CGH PRICE: $ 35.00 Large clone with bright central banded variegation on each ( broad fleshy leaf held in a crown of foliage above the long necked stem); R. Bennett's excellent clone which presents impressively fragrant blossoms--these immense heads of tubular ivory flowers are best initiated by letting the old mature bulb dry enough during the summer to enter a dormancy period. Start watering (or simply set in a pan kept full of water) heavily early fall to bring forth the richly scented winter flowers along with fresh brightly variegated foliage.

51029 CRINUM MOOREI VARIEGATUM AMARY CGH TGH 35.00 Variegated form of "Longneck Swamp Lily" of Natal; broad, nearly succulent leaves with creamy white and straw yellow stripes, usually with bright green rim top a somewhat woody trunk or "neck" adding much drama. Tulip shaped pale pink quickly fading to pearl white flowers in nodding clusters. This most showy. "Veldt Lily" needs to be dormant during most of the hot summer in order to re-sprout and bloom mid-winter. Reaches considerable girth--but always earns its space with a spectacular display of striking foliage and showy blossoms.

51032 CRINUM ST. CHRISTOPHER [HYB] AMARY CGH PRICE: $ 10.00 "Tulip Crinum" Fragrant snow-white tulip-cupped flower clusters over compact vases of fleshy leaves; we have received reports that customers have bloomed this in a sunny window with regular fertilizer and feet in a shallow bowl of water.

40172 CYANASTRUM CORDIFOLIUM COMPACTUM CYN CGH PRICE: $ 35.00 VERY LIMITED AVAILABLILTY "Indoor Hosta" Rosettes of corrugated heart (cordi-) leaves arise from thickened corms. Unusual soil level blossoms give its Latin name "Blue Star." An evergreen, very tropical, low height, Hosta look-alike. Imperative for serious collectors. Totally distinctive; seldom offered because of extremely slow growth.

51921 DICHORISANDRA PENDULA COMM TGH PRICE: $ 8.00 Tall bamboo mimic stalks from which arch pagodesque stems cloaked with glossy deep green, slightly patterned waxy leaves and beautiful delicate clusters of blue shading to violet spiderwort blossoms held on arching outthrust stems, thus the "Blue Pendant Ginger" although only the flowers are pendant, and the plant is of Spiderwort blood. Has become a big hit with the hobby greenhouse croud always looking for a new "wow" plant with which to amaze their friends.

50517 DICHORISANDRA THRYSIFLORA VARIEGATA COMM HP PRICE: $ 4.25 "Blue Ginger" Heads of dark electric-blue flowers top tall, jointed stems with glossy heavy leaves faintly banded silver & toned purplish-blue beneath. Brazilian native of easy culture. This and its name arrived here from Longwood Gardens many years ago.

41846 DIETES VEGETA [MORAEA IRIDOIDES] IRI CGH HP PRICE: $ 4.00 Beautiful & strong growing "African Iris"; Two foot fans with white fls marked yellow, style crests blue patterned. Strong short rhizomes (thus Dietes, as Moraeas are cormus in the current state of taxonomy for this confused batch of Irids--the plants are not confused, only the taxonomists)--the rhizomes hold the decorative strong evergreen leaf fans. Give full sun and stand back.

40192 DIOSCOREA MACROSTACHYA (MEXICANA ) DIO HP TGH $ 28.50 LIMITED AVAILABILITY This is the famous Mexican Turtle Back Plant. It will be available for shipping in the early spring of 2010. You might want to order at this time for spirng delivery. It is now called "Dioscorea mexicana" rather than "Dioscorea macrostachya." Either name seems to be used with equal regularity. Annual vines spring out of the turtle back caudex. If kept warm, the vines tend to remain, just not grow actively during the winter. Good for a south window.

40193 DIOSCOREA DISCOLOR MULTICOLOR DIO HP TGH PRICE: $ 12.50 THIS IS A VERY SEASONAL PLANT. IF YOU ORDER, YOUR ORDER MAY BE DELAYED FOR AVAILABILITY A horticultural form with wider leaves than the species with richer deeper colors and dramatic bands on the quilted lobed foliage--each violet backed leaf marbled in platinum and nilegreen with red veins. Winter domant just like the species, re-sprouting from a "weird potato like" tuber late spring: do not remove from the soil during the dormant period. While challenging, always an amazing plant for total eye candy. The dormancy cycles can be complex--thus, we emphatically do not recommend this for beginners.

65093 DRIMIOPSIS MACULATA LIL HP TGH PRICE: $ 3.50 Maroon-green spots on bright evergreen green leaves with a narrow "petiole" over fat surface bulbs; spikes of white flowers fading to green.

65681 DRIMIOPSIS SAUNDERSIAE SUNNY SMILE COMM HP CGH PRICE: $ 15.00 Wide fleshy spotted leaves randomly striped creamy lime; forms an impressive low growing fleshy rosette of fabulous foliage of longitudinal stripes over polka dots. Great new introduction.

51287 EUCHARIS CHRISTINE AMARYL HP PRICE: $ 10.00 The excellent extremely fragrant "Compact Amazon Lily" with slimmer tighter foliage than the species grandiflora, yet relatively large waxy white daffodil shaped flowers are produced in considerable numbers once the offsetting bulbs reach a mature size thanks to your providing a warm richly fertilized mix with bight light; good for conditions too warm for its Amaryllis/Hippeastrum cousins--thus a perfect sunny window houseplant easily bloomed.

51040 EUCHARIS GRANDIFLORA [AMAZONICA] AMARY HP TGH PRICE: $ 10.00 "Amazon Lily" Highly scented white waxy blossoms shaped like nodding daffodils held above glossy deep green leaves; ideal houseplant for a room too warm for its amaryllis cousins to thrive.

83241 EUCOMIS COMOSA PINK BLOSSOMS LIL CGH PRICE: $ 12.00 This selection of "Pineapple Lily" has stout stalks of distinctly pink toned flowers on the thick stems topped with the "Carmen Miranda" leafy bracted topknot. This winter dormant genus now more correctly in Hyacinthaceae. We selected this color clone from plants grown from seed received from the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens in the early 80s.

65640 EUCOMIS COMOSA SPARKLING BURGUNDY [OAKHURST] LIL HH CGH PRICE: $ 10.00 The lovely "Purple Pineapple Lily" with somewhat succulent burgundy foliage forming a wide succulent rosette from which arise the distinctive greenish white flowers closely packed on a long succulent spike lasting months (typically topped with a bizarre topknot of leaflets, thus resembling a pineapple); remember that this needs a slight winter dormancy even if grown in a greenhouse pot. Hardy outdoors here (usually) if planted deeply and mulched thickly; more reliably hardy in the deep south.

65676 EUCOMIS POLE-EVANSII LIL CGH PRICE: $ 25.00 "Giant Green Pineapple Lily" From a whorl of wide crisped undulate strap leaves reaching 2' at maturity emerges an (eventually) 3 to 5' stalk densely covered with greenish white flowers, topped with a crown "coma" of oblong crisped bracts. Major. You will need considerable space as this matures over the years. We usually need to remove the large succulent-floppy leaves before packing.

51246 EUCROSIA BICOLOR AMARYL TGH PRICE: $ 7.25 Xerophytic Ecuadorian with attractive Phaedranassa-like leaves; dusky bronze-red fls in elaborate shapes are clustered on erect slim stems. The dormancy cycle seems rather unpredictable! Nonetheless, quite attractive when it tires of dormancy.

60057 FOCKEA EDULIS ASC HP TGH PRICE: $ 11.50 Caudiform from the South African veldts. Silvery swollen base with raised bumpy "bark"; small rubbery succulent foliage. Not fussy about conditions (well, don't freeze it!) and thus certainly one of the best succulents for beginners; yet quite handsome fat bottomed character which becomes more impressive every year. Thus, a good way to start your collection of caudexes with a plant you'll never dream of parting with.

20494 GLOXINIA ARION [HYB] GES HP TGH PRICE: $ 6.25 Stout rosy magenta stems with G. perennis type foliage topped by wide slipper flowers flaring into a bell of rich magenta with spotted throat, somewhat fragrant. Batcheller hybrid. Dormancy cycles seem somewhat random over the years--constant warmth can nearly eliminate the cycle but may reduce the vigor of the plant.

20166 GLOXINIA SYLVATICA GES HP TGH PRICE: $ 3.00 Formerly Seemannia latifolia. "Christmas Slippers" This is a select evergreen clone with narrow felted dark leaves closely ranked, covering the stiff cascading stems; topped with many red-orange slim guppy-mouthed blossoms during the winter months. Excellent houseplant; even when not in bloom the attractive foliage is evergreen and attractive all seasons.

30730 GONATOPUS BOIVINII ARAC TGH PRICE: $ 18.00 Large Central American species producing a large tuber from which arises an impressive thick snakeskin colored stalk, with a distinctive central pulvinus (movable joint), topped with three branched foliage; tall showy white-cream flowers. Typically summer dormant in our experience, thus the opposite cycle to its Asian cousins the Amorphophallus species.

51045 HABRANTHUS ROBUSTUS RUSSEL MANNING AMARYL CGH HP PRICE: $ 5.50 Select small evergreen bulb, a close cousin of the more familiar "Agentine Rain Lily" with clear magenta petals fading to a delicate lilac-purple. Now considered H. estensis by some. Evergreen waxy strap foliage is evergreen when situated in the conservatory/greenhouse; best to bind the succulent roots in a shallow pot to encourage heavy bloom production; needs full sun.

51047 HAEMANTHUS ALBIFLOS PUBESCENS AMARYL HP CGH PRICE: $ 28.00 Ciliate-margined evergreen leaves with downy leaf surfaces; "White Paint Brush" flowers presented on short thick stems, mid winter. Some sources relegate this to just H. albiflos, yet we find this to be easier to grow and to bloom, more attractively foliaged, and slightly more compact than the species form; This Amaryllis cousin must have bright light and good air movement at all time to flourish--perfect for that spot which is just a bit too sunny for your Clivia.

53023 HEDYCHIUM CORONARIUM ZIN TGH HP CGH PRICE: $ 12.00 "Butterfly Ginger" Fragrant white flowers top very tall stalks. The heavily perfumed ivory petals are used in Hawaiian leis, hence, also known as the "Garland Flower." Evergreen species easy to grow with good light.

53132 HEDYCHIUM DR. MOY [BRUSHSTROKES] ZIN HH CGH PRICE: $ 12.00 Hybrid of H. coccinea x cornarium with scented salmon orchid mimic flower clusters impressively tip this "Hyperwarp Ginger" tall stalks which are sheathed by white paint splashed coppery leaves; from Dr. Moy of San Antonio Botanic.Gardens. Once established, this tropical appearing ginger has proved winter hardy here with careful winter protection; better considered a stunning (and evergreen) container plant north of Zone 7 or lift and store the thick succulent tubers as you would Cannas. Lots of glamor for very little effort.

41410 HEDYCHIUM ELIZABETH [HYB] ZIN TGH CGH PRICE: $ 6.00 Showy ginger with clusters of clear pink blossoms; needs to reach a considerable stature before producing the fragrant flowers.

53027 HEDYCHIUM [ORIENTAL] ENREI ZIN TGH CGH PRICE: $ 18.00 Oriental hybrid originally received from plantsman Jack Craig outstanding with neat slim foliage topped with clusters of undulant white petals & spidery tufts on the intensely fragrant flowers. with the dark yellow centers; reaches considerable stature. The perfume can become almost overwhelming in a closed greenhouse. Swooning can occur.

53118 HEDYCHIUM FILIGREE ZIN CGH PRICE: $15.00 Foliage more compact than most, topped with creammy thick blossoms with butterscotch hearts--like widespread Cattleyas; but must reach some considerable maturity before the flower production begins.

53030 HEDYCHIUM [ORIENTAL] SHIN-SEI ZIN TGH CGH PRICE: $ 10.00 Oriental hybrid. "Shin"=new; "Sei"=green. Dramatic clusters of white and yellow blossoms. In limited production; best to inquire before ordering this giant creature originally sent to us by Jack Craig.

43122 HIPPEASTRUM GRACILIS X CANDY FLOSS [HYB] AMARYL CGH HP PRICE: $ 3.50Our cross of a small flowered evergreen species with a giant pink blossomed Belgian hybrid "Amaryllis" could produce a range of flower types. For your experiment.

51133 HIPPEASTRUM GRACILIS DULCINEA SCARLET BABY AMARY TGH HP PRICE: $ 20.00 Horticultural form; emerging strap leaves with a rich puplish cast foil the startling rich scarlet flowers (usually four per stalk) of rich heavy texture. In a warm greenhouse this is evergreen.

43121 HIPPEASTRUM GRACILIS X HIPPEASTRUM VITTATUM [HORT] AMARY HP PRICE: $ 3.50Our cross of these essentially evergreen species should produce a range of flared scarlet blossoms with a white throat. Take your chances.

51059 HIPPEASTRUM MRS GARFIELD [HYB] AMARY TGH HP PRICE: $ 32.00 This collector's fantasy, the "Banded Amaryllis" with cream centered wide strap leaves, produces handsome trumpet fls of soft white elegantly reticulated with rose veins; famous heirloom hybrid of H. reticulatum x `Defiance' of 1800's, Veitch & Sons. Unlike the "Dutch" hybrids mass marketed today, this fabulous heirloom maintains evergreen variegated strap foliage and regularly blooms each year, especially as the roots become more restricted.

51003 HIPPEASTRUM PAPILIO AMARY HP CGH PRICE: $ 8.75 "Butterfly Amaryllis" Nearly evergreen glossy strap leaves; heads of red fls flamed with creamy white. Show stopper. Does not require a "dormant" period to bloom, thus an easy houseplant always maintaining its attractive foliage. If you have room for only one Hippeastrum in your plantroom, this fabulously beautiful, yet easily grown, bulb would be the one for you.

51057 HIPPEASTRUM PUNICEUM [EQUESTRE] AMARY HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 The Carribean's "Evergreen Amaryllis" Large bright salmon-orange trumpet blossoms, with green & yellow flames, held elegantly over small glossy deep green strap leaves; keep underpotted for best bloom

51295 HIPPEASTRUM SAN ANTONIO ROSE AMARYL CGH HP PRICE: $ 8.00 Compactly statured clumping Amaryllis with reddish veined violet blushed strap leaf reverses; violet pink blossom clusters. Likely overwinters in Z8 and higher as hybridizer William Bell crossed Hippeastrum aulicum stenopetalum x traubii doraniae. Thanks to Steve Lowe for sharing this with us--as has proven to be an easily bloomed dependable "Violet Amaryllis" houseplant for us with the added bonus of beautiful highly colored foliage!

51072 HYMENOCALLIS CARIBEAE VARIEGATA AMARY TGH HP $ 12.00 "Caribbean Amaryllis" Evergreen foot-long waxy strap leaves with fantasticly beautiful wide rich ivory margins; Very showy cultivar demanding much warmth and constant moisture--actually prefers to be completely aquatic to produce the elaborate scented blossoms. If allowed to chill or slightly dry during the winter this bulb will drop its foliage, but the ivory edged strap leaves emerge again vigorously in the spring.

51094 HYMENOCALLIS [ISMENE] HARRISIANA AMAR CGH HP HH PRICE: $ 8.00 "Mexican Daffodil" Modest foot tall upright slim leaves; curious green-tinted upright webbed (that is, the hymen is intact!) white funnel-shaped flowers in a small umbel early summer; Mexico City native perfect for small water gardens or tubs. Seems to bloom more readily if encouraged to rest in the winter, emerging vigorously in spring from dormancy.

51015 HYMENOCALLIS NARCISSIFLORA SULPHUR QUEEN AMARY PRICE: $8.50 Formerly Ismene calathina `Sulphurea.' "Golden Peruvian Daffodil / "Sacred Inca Lily." Name derived from the Greek "hymen" =membrane, "kallos" =beautiful, for the brilliant primrose yellow cup-like membrane uniting the outstretched stamens and filiments. Responds well to aquatic culture; but also delivers a remarkable display if planted in rich garden soil during the summer. Best to store out of water during winter dormant cycle.

SWEET TATERS (IPOMEAS) for the 2010 SEASON

TRENDY TATERS: Astoundingly popular for urns, bedding, baskets, windowboxes, even trellises. We do stress that these are totally tropical. So if you garden on Long Island or in Oregon and plant these in chilled ground the evening before a dusting of snow, they will--to quote a bemused Seattle Customer--"simply disappear." Thus, please allow us to ship these to you in a timely fashion unless you maintain a greenhouse for your yam yearnings.

99047 IPOMEA: TRENDY TATERS COLLECTION (FIVE TYPES) A strong selection of Ipomea for baskets, urns, or windowboxes--will not include the fussy 'Ivory Jewel' or any Morning Glory types. Over the last few years this group of plants has become famous for showing off the whole season long! For those of you with hobby greenhouses, we have included some photos of the following cultivars showing the charming flowers often produced midwinter when heat and light intensities are sufficient to induce flower buds. These beautiful Ipomeas are perfect cascading from windowboxes, urns, and hanging baskets; yet, do not overlook their cheerful willingness to cover a bare surfaced bedding dilemma (they will cover a rough patch of mulch bewteen evergreens or leggy shrubs with ease, making you appear to be a master designer), or their ability to complement and compliment a slightly tired bed of Hosta or other perennials you did not get around to dividing or redigging this year (making you appear to be innovative and daring in your design ideas); indeed, we feel that 'Lady Fingers' is best used as a fast growing ground cover as it can be a bit too vigorous in a small urn or basket . . . As these decorative "Sweet Potato's" tuberous roots hold ample water to get them though a bit of neglect from time to time, this crew always assists the gardener, rather than creating new problems and challenges. PRICE: $15.00 plus PRICE: $4.50shipping.

55962 IPOMEA BATATAS ACE OF SPADES CONV TGH HP PRICE: $5.00 Striking blackish maroon spade shaped (heart shaped) leaves are thickly set on succulent trailing stems; same habit as 'Blackie' with edible white tubers. Recently has been "re-marketed" on East Coast as 'Purple Heart.' Must reflect a time of war. Fabulous in urns and baskets; very effective when paired with the chartreuse 'Margarita' in large outdoor bedding schemes. Will hold color well even in shady locations.

40403 IPOMEA BATATAS BLACKIE CONV TGH HP PRICE: $ 3.00 "Black Yam" or "Purple-leaved Sweet Potato" Dark palmate leaves overlap to create a starburst lacy effect while firmly anchored on sturdy maroon-stemmed vines; fabulous in hanging baskets. As popular now as when we first offered it some twenty years ago with Carolyn in the Country Hills catalogue.

41427 IPOMEA BATATAS BRONZE BEAUTY CONV TGH HP PRICE: $ 5.00 "Pumpkin Skin Sweet Potato" Excellent trailing stems with the palmate outlined leaf of 'Blackie,' yet richly toned bronzy pumpkin to dusky orange depending on light exposure. Very trendy color for mixed containers. The perfect solution if 'Ace of Spades' is too aggresively purple for your design, and 'Margarita' is simply too too acid ochre.

49452 IPOMEA BATATAS FRECKLES CON TGH HP PRICE: $ 5.50 Fingered "Sweet Potato Vine" with the entire surface splashed and streaked in yellow lime to create a showy tie-dyed effect.

49451 IPOMEA BATATAS GOLD FINGERS CONV TGH HP PRICE: $ 5.00 A fast growing form bright yellow lime like 'Margarita' but with attractively fingered leaves like 'Blackie'.

59237 IPOMEA BATATAS IVORY JEWEL CONV TGH PRICE: $ 12.50 The remarkable "Variegated Sweet Potato" selection made by Doug Lohman with fluted heart-shaped leaves richly splashed with creamy lime & vanilla jade tones accented by ivory veins--difficult but remarkable Much prized by growers of anything but green. This is the one collector cultivar not likely to hold its own in mixed combination container designs, but best grown as an individual specimen.

55616 IPOMEA BATATAS MARGARITA [CHARTREUSE] CONV HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.75 The "Golden Sweet Potato Vine" produces ranks of bright yellow-ochre heart shaped leaves, becoming more halbert-lobed as the plant expands & matures, even forming a fine purple rim in sun--obviously the perfect companion for 'Ace of Spades' as well as 'Blackie'; if grown during the winter in your greenhouse, will produce sparce violet blushed morning glory blossoms--more curious than decorative flowers.

59194 IPOMEA BATATAS PURPLE TUBER CONV TGH HP PRICE: $ 3.75 "Purple Yam" Hawaiian clone with purple fleshed tubers (said to be at their most yummy when prepared with your deep pit roast pig); very ornately cut clean-green cookie cutter somewhat palmate foliage on self branching meandering stems. Amazingly popular! Certainly a case of having your yam cake and eating it too. We are impressed that this is the most ordered cultivar during some past seasons. Hawaiian cookouts seem to be on the increase. Or perhaps plantsmen simply like to eat their bedding or urn designs after enjoying the summer foliar display?

55564 IPOMEA BATATAS TRICOLOR [PINK POTATO] CONV CGH HH PRICE: $ 5.50 Remarkable slate green sharply lobed "Sweet Potato" leaves with bright pink margins setting to rosy cream. An amazingly beautiful cultivar initially shared with us by Doug Ruhren who had inherited it from Yinger's Asian peregrinations; and indeed, under the original clone name of 'Tricolor' it was a 1980s introduction in the nurseries and gardens of India--where it is pictured in publications from India from the 1920s.

54336 IPOMEA BATATAS VARDAMAN CONV TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Odd purple-toned heart shaped leaves which mature to a rich dark dusky to murky green. Quite vigorous maroon stemmed heirloom with attractive foliage & orange fleshed tasty tubers which are categoried in the baking stringless type of yamflesh considered the very best for sweet tater pie--and so marketed even today. So after frosts have terminated the beautiful foliage, dig up the tubers and make a pie.

56564 IPOMEA LADY FINGERS [SPECIES UNIDENTIFIED] CONV HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Extremely vigorous "Fingered Sweet Potato" with vigorous stems holding aloft stunning dark leaves, with seven deep fingered lobes accented with dark purple raised veins on the reverse. Loves aquatic conditions; but thrives equally well cascading dramatically from a windowbox or urn; needs a large basket if grown in a hanging basket for the foliage is quite vigorous and the tubers need room to form. Some have suggested that this may more correctly be Convolvulus althaeoides tenuissimus; others point out that it has the seven lobes of I mauritiana as well as the showy violed eyed winter morning glory blossoms so readily produced. Sometimes we have underestimated the popularity of this astoundingly vigorous showoff--but stock is plentiful for '08.

20172 KOHLERIA FLIRT [HYB] GES TERR TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Worley's compact hybrid has best habit of Kohlerias--mounds of turquoise-blue downy leaves, with purple veins, strikingly foil the soft red tubular blossoms with cerise dots. Handsome terrarium plant; thrives under light gardening conditions where it does not usually even go dormant as most Kohleria species and hybrids do.

65823 LEDEBOURIA OVATIFOLIA LIL HP TGH PRICE: $ 10.00 Very wide pale green jade-toned fleshy leaves fan out into an open circle over the fat, swollen surface bulb; winter dormant (leafless) if kept quite cool during winter; very slow to offset. Of more botanic than horticultural interest.

65824 LEDEBOURIA PAUCIFLORA LIL HP TGH PRICE: $ 3.00 Wonderful miniature with delicately mottled fleshy leaves on clustering glossy surface bulbs. Lovely undemanding houseplant; always a favorite carefree windowsill citizen; excellent addition to any dish garden and a great visual companion to the more commonly available L. socialis.

65827 LEDEBOURIA SOCIALIS LIL HP TGH PRICE: $ 3.00 Formerly Scilla violacea. "Silver Squill" Rich purple swollen bulblets in thick clusters support small violet- backed leaves whose surfaces are dotted silver. Easy houseplant with small wands of tiny white flowers produced seasonally. If allowed to become a many-headed specimen, the winter blooms can be quite impressive en mass.

65831 LEDEBOURIA SOCIALIS MINOR LIL HP TGH PRICE: $ 5.50 Formerly Scilla violacea dwarf form. " Mini Silver Squill" Rich purple swollen bulblets in thick clusters support small violet- backed leaves whose surfaces are dotted silver. Easy houseplant with small wands of tiny white flowers produced seasonally. If allowed to become a many-headed specimen, the winter blooms can be quite impressive en mass.

65829 LEDEBOURIA SOCIALIS GILA MONSTER LIL HP TGH PRICE: $ 6.75 A lovely olive ovals scattered on ash blue to glaucus green leaves held in bunches over the swollen bulbs which ofset to form a perfect hemisphere. Originally shared with us by Ruth Crane, this beauty is probably a separate species not accurately identified.

65832 LEDEBOURIA [SCILLA] LUTEO-SOCIALIS [HORT] LIL HP TGH PRICE: $5.50 Nomenclature most confused--appearance of a giant Ledebouria pauciflora with floppy freckled foliage; reaches impressive proportions.

56904 LEDEBOURIA VIOLACEA LIL HP TGH PRICE: $ 9.50 This is an old plant, but a new intro for Glasshouse Works. This is shorter and higher color than Ledebouria socialis. The spots are darker and the plants are more compact. We have seen this listed as Scilla violacea also.

65833 ORNITHOGALUM CAUDATUM LIL HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 "Sea Onion" or "German Onion" Glossy strap leaves top the ever expanding, ever more impressive opalescent green bulbs (which sit on the surface of the soil) whose sides constantly erupt to give "birth" to new bulblets (produced in clusters under each onion skin of the bulb surface), thus known everywhere as the "Pregnant Onion"; easy first plant for a child. With maturity each big round waxy bulb sends forth a thick stemmed long wand with small white lily fls striped green. Easy. Easy. Easy. Still remains the most ordered succulent bulb in this section. If you would like to grow a giant statured cousin (the one who took steriods) see Albuca crinifolia listed earlier in this website. Do not confuse with the slow-growing "Climbing Onion" Bowiea volubilis.

65616 ORNITHOGALUM TENUIFOLIUM LIL HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Very showy glossy surface bulbs topped with sweeps of upright slim lf blades & wands of green flowers used for cutting in tropical gardens. Offsetting clumps soon produce handsome specimens with gradually forming hemispheres of the waxy endlessly offsetting bulbs. Must have full sun to keep the foliage erect.

OXALIS (False Shamrocks) for the 2010 SEASON

The Oxalis or False Shamrock group of plants

The False Shamrocks: Why not try an OXALIS COLLECTION by ordering Stock #99663 for a group of 5 including the tried and true plants that everyone can remember from their childhood. Some of these might have dorman cycles, others grow year round for only PRICE: $18.00.
If you want a particular cultivar, order it by its specific stock number as many which can be possibly included in the above collection are not offered below.

40690 OXALIS ALSTONII [HEDYSAROIDES RUBRA] OXA TERR HP PRICE: $ 6.25 "Firefern" Branched wiry purple stems hold whorls of reddish maroon leaflets and nearly everblooming yellow flowers. Excellent windowsill subject; typically growing better in the window or under lights than in the greenhouse. Beautiful centerpiece in any terrarium. Do not overpot nor overwater.

40693 OXALIS CORYMBOSA AUREO-RETICULATA OXA HP CGH $ 4.25 "Gold Veined Oxalis" Low habit of soft "Shamrock" lvs with yellow retriculation; pink flowers in spring. Tends to go dormant in Southern (and even Midwerstern) summer heat. Loves the late winter conditions of your greenhouse or sunny southern windowsill. The dormant bulblets are odd little white tapioca like soft orbs--one customer called to explain she had just discarded the pot of disgusting maggots we had sent her. She had tossed out her dormant Oxalis bublets before they could even sprout lvs!

40697 OXALIS DEPPEI IRON CROSS OXA HP CGH PRICE: $ 6.50 Also O. tetraphylla speciosa. The "Iron Cross Oxalis" sports wide maroon zones on the felty leaves held aloft on quite long petioles--situate so that winds will not break these long stems; lovely rose-pink flowers easily produced with good sun, well drained soil and organic fertilizer. Called "Lucky Clover" for the four part triangular leaflets. Expect to be completely dormant during the bulk of the winter--we find that they winter best left in the same pot and soil they were growing in, dividing them or not just as they start to emerge late winter to early spring. Very dramatic in summertime urns and windowboxes. We prefer to send mossed bublets without foliage, as the petiole stems nearly always break in shipment.

40708 OXALIS MAROON LEAF [FLORIBUNDA?] OXA HP CGH PRICE: $ 3.00 Extraordinary dark glowing maroon leaves cascade from the central bundle of buried bublets--altho bulbous this easily grown species remains evergreen with sufficient heat & light with cycles of lilac flower clusters blooming throughout the seasons. Perfect choice for those not comfortable with the dormant cycles of the more famous purple leaved Oxalis regnellii atropurpurea (triangularis) which tyically rests during the winter to emerge from its pot until early spring. This deserves to be more popular than it currently is--especially as it is a real trooper in sunny windowboxes and patio urns of summertime, as well as the winter windowsill.

41829 OXALIS PES-CAPRAE OXA HP CGH PRICE: $ 6.50 "Bermuda Buttercup" South African species with long lived thickened roots and scaly bulbs; with winter foliage come the showy showers of yellow blossoms. This is absolutely summer dormant and will rot if kept too moist during this period.

40703 OXALIS REGNELLII OXA HP CGH PRICE: $ 3.00 Obtriangular leaves are most attractive, plus nearly everblooming white flower clusters recommend this as the best Oxalis for the house--the Victorian's favorite. More than likely that rugged soul your grandmother grew in a clay filled coffee can in her sunny kitchen window. Fabulous as a hanging basket display in your hobby greenhouse as well as any number of container combinations outdoors during the milder seasons. While a tuberous species, this one seems to have no dormancy cycle as long as if given good light, well drained soil, and low amounts of fertilizer. If however, during your vacation your very most trusted friend forgets to water it and it drops all foliage, fear not: gradually start watering again and the tubers will send up new life.

41490 OXALIS REGNELLII ATROPURPUREA [TRIANGULARIS] OXA HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.25 Incredible "Red Velvet Shamrock"--a striking selection with handsome dusky glowing purple foliage with a central vivid violet flame on each triangular leaflet; low statured mound topped with many delicately toned lilac fls. A knockout with a distinct winter dormancy cycle (unlike the species) if allowed to dry out or to chill, or even experience very low light levels. Has been featured and pictured in many articles recently.

51901 OXALIS REGNELLII DOROTHY CHAO OXA HP TGH PRICE: $ 8.50 A splendid "Silver Oxalis" sport from Dorothy Chao with splendidly large obtriangular leaves a glaucous milky green--most distinctive pewter hue beautifully complemented by clusters of palest lilac pink blossoms produced with abandon. Subtle power. Tends to catch the eye no matter how it is placed.

41645 OXALIS RIO DE JANERIO [SPECIES AFFINITY TO O. DISPAR] OXA HP TGH PRICE: $ 8.75 Out of Stock until 2010. Remarkable unidentified collection from the mountain sides of Rio with erect wiry stems topped with thick diamond boat-shaped leaves, in threes, each with shimmering silvery dreamy central variegation. Cute cheerful yellow blossoms, thus the "Goldie Locks" plant perfect for window ledge, under lights, as well as a patio pot plant during the summer. Eventually creating its own miniature "standard" shape on its wiry woody stem unless you pinch the growing tip to encourage branching. A gem for any light gardener; quickly winning over designers of terrarium landscapes as well. Quite a jewel in a terrarium or Wardian Case plant combination. Sometime called Oxalis Silver & Gold.

40694 OXALIS RUBRA ALBA [CRASSIPES] OXA HP CGH PRICE: $ 6.00 "Summer Shamrock" Reliably evergreen species with low, soft green fleshy leaves mounding over short succulent stalks which emerge from thick underground tubers; clusters of small white flowers reach their height during summer. Traditional Victorian favorite as a year 'round pot plant demanding full sun to flourish--now rediscovered and utlized in summer urns, windowboxes, and mixed containers as well. We like to present it in a eight inch hanging basket. The fleshy bulbs were prized by the Incans who proclaimed that "Stew without chunu is like life without love."

40970 OXALIS RUBRA [ROSEA] OXA HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.50 Free-blooming "Old Fashioned Pink Shamrock" grandma grew on her windowsill with its seemingly endless clusters of bright rosy flowers, veined red, over the shamrock foliage. Thick tubers give rise to many succulent stalks--indestructable, does not go dormant unless you forget to water it for a month or so.

40706 OXALIS VARIABILIS [PURPUREA] GRAND DUCHESS OXA HP CGH PRICE: $5.25 Summer-dormant "Grand Duchess Oxalis" produces pendant mound of soft clover leaves with large silky flowers of lavender--this needs very bright winter light to produce the showy blossoms. We prefer to ship this late summer just before the foliage emerges after summer dormancy cycle. This prima donna requires at least a quart sized pot in order to provide enough space for its large statured mass of thick overlapping foliage; in a large hanging basket 'Grand Duchess' will cascade for a striking display of the winter blossoms lasting well into spring for us. Needs some considerable elbow room to show off adequately.

51079 PHAEDRANASSA CHLORACRA AMARY HP TGH PRICE: $ 10.00 Exposed glossy bulbs offset to form mounds topped by short waxy leaves and occassional shy white nodding trumpet flowers soon fading to a pale pink with faint green tips. Beautiful when treated as a foliage potplant. Remember, a chill or a severe drought cause a mini-dormancy, practiced by some growers who feel that the bulbs are more likely to produce their shy blossoms after re-emerging from such an "artificial" dormancy.

51080 PHAEDRANASSA DUBIA AMARYL HP TGH PRICE: $ 10.00 Short 8" gray strap leaves arched over surface bulbs; odd amaryllid flowers rimmed green. Perhaps best grown as a succulent. Of interest in spite of its most dubious name to all rare bulb collectors. (Translation: of greater botanical than horticultural interest.)

68355 POLIANTHES TUBEROSA SUVARNA REKHA/MARGINATA AGA CGH PRICE: $ 22.00 "Variegated Tuberose" A cultivar from K.S.G.'s Nursery with each waxy leaf margined creamy-gold; ivory waxy intensely fragrant flowers were called `Omixachitl' by Aztec for "Bone Flower" in their rituals. A very beautiful variegate for the serious collector, yet of easy culture.

66905 POLIANTHES TUBEROSA THE PEARL AGAV CGH PRICE: $ 6.75 The fabuously scented "Double Flowered Tuberose" for intense fragrance in your winter greenhouse. Or: turn the dormancy cycle around and bloom this in your summer bed with the intensely fragrant "Omixachitl" blossoms creating a possible event for a summer party once you translate the Aztec codex as to which ritual need be performed!

60603 SENECIO TROPAEOLIFOLIUS COMP HP CGH PRICE: $4.25 "Succulent Nasturtium" Cluster of curiously articulated tuberous roots support wiry vines with peltate irregularly rounded leaves which show a red rim in high light. Popular mimic. Shown to best advantage when grown in a hanging basket kept away from direct sun.

60604 SENECIO TUBEROSUS COMP HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.25 Elaborate several-sectioned caudiform tuberous bases send up slim stems usually toppling under the small gray leaves. A good starting point plant to see if you wish to start a collection of caudex plants for this fat daisy has no dormancy cycle, no fear of full sun or part shade, and no dilemmas over the possibly irregular watering habits of its master.

20502 SINNINGIA BILL HULL [HYB] GES HP TGH PRICE: $ 5.75 USUALLY LIMITED Marvelous reliable Ted Bona hybrid of S. eumorpha with nodding slipper-shaped impressive white flowers held elegantly above the oval foliage on short stems emerging from the basal bulb (which should not be burried). Easy.

20469 SINNINGIA BRAZEN [HYB] GES HP CGH PRICE: $ 5.50 Our name for an extremely vigorous Ted Bona hybrid of S. reitzii; the erect purplish woody stems produce a multitude of small rosy tubed flowers with flounced overlapping tips of magenta with deep wine-red netting. Very long lived as keeps pilling up new tubers above old ones, making this irresistable to caudex collectors.

20232 SINNINGIA CARDINALIS GES CGH HP PRICE: $ 6.00 Pairs of velvety leaves held on strong stalks emerging from surface tubers and topped with clusters of bright cardinal red tubular blossoms.

20359 SINNINGIA SELLOVII GES HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.75 From soft basal foliage mature stems (eventually as tall as three feet) bear many pendant swollen dark salmon pink fls attractive to every passing hummingbird; seed collector Tim Ross recommends full light to encourage spring to fall bloom for this Brazillian native. Various plant friends store the (eventually) considerably sized tuber during the winter with other tropical bulbs, then plant out directly into their garden beds (sunny spots are best, with rich well drained soil--anywhere glads and dahlias thrive) for an astounding summer display--few visitors to their gardens can even begin to guess what the succulent leaved Gesneriad with an attentant vigilant hummingbird might possibly be (they'll never guess Gesneriad, alone Sinningia)! Since I characteristically neglect to dig most tropical bulbs & tubers, I keep my oldest tubers (some now 15 years old) in giant 15" baskets where they are essentially evergreen.

20230 SINNINGIA TUBIFLORA GES HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Tall stems with small scalloped leaves tipped with fragrant white tubed blossoms with flared lobes. Unusual chill tolerant type grown as an outdoor plant in southern California (but tubers must be considerably below frost line in perfectly drained soil). Rather too leggy to be an attractive houseplant--and the dormancy cycles can be a challenge.

65547 SMILAX SPECIES CHINA LIL CGH PRICE: $ 12.00 Handsome "Chinese Hellfetter" from Plant It Herbs Nursery who received it from a Chinese collection made by Robert Newman. Short wiry stems aflutter with shiny attractively mottled small saggitate leaves. Very handsome with time.

30539 STEUDNERA COLOCASIIFOLIA ARAC TGH HP PRICE: $ 22.00 Semi-aquatic "Blue Caladium" gradually forming an erect Alocasia-like tuberous trunk topped with dusky blue-green lilypad leaves. Distinctive cousin of the Colocasia tribe, and like these cousins, takes a winter rest as a part of its agreement to be treated as if domesticated.

51270 TULBAGHIA SIMMLERI AMARYL CGH PRICE: $ 4.25 South African "Mauve Onion" with evergreen succulent strap foliage; sweetly scented mauve colored flower heads. Good pot herb with fashionably edible flowers; seems to flower more readily if crowded in a 10"clay pot. We notice that this is now featured as an aquatic subject of late. Typically sent as divisions.

41478 TULBAGHIA VIOLACEA SILVER LACE AMARY CGH HP PRICE: $ 5.25 "Variegated Society Garlic" Clumping evergreen narrow fleshy leaves edged pearly white; lavender flowers on one foot stems. Try the leaves in a sandwich! Ever so sophisticated addition to any tub of tropical herbs, giving a dramatic vertical accent. Now you can have your variegate and eat it too.

31720 TYPHONIUM FILIFORMIS [HORT] ARAC CGH PRICE: $ 18.00 Small statured mound of arrowshaped (cordate) grass green leaves on long oddly channeled stalks emerging from a tuber; the "Perak Herb" with yellow spathes dotted blood red. Dale Wagner's Philippine clone used for various mysterious (to us) medical herbal combinations. For us this remains more a botanical curosity than a horticultural gem. There: that was harsh.

30684 TYPHONIUM VENOSUM [GUTTATUM] ARAC TGH PRICE: $ 4.25 "Voo Doo Bulb" Sauromatum venosum's correct name: in late winter the elongated dark brown spadix emerges from the fat bulb, opening to reveal its maroon spoted interior and the slim blackish spadix whose fetid fragrance is beloved of flies. After a few days this bloom collapses--you will have probably collapsed somewhat earlier. If not already planted, plant the bulb because it will soon be ready to send up the snakeskin mottled thick stalk topped by a curved horn-like segmented leaf. The timing will be different if planted outdoors--a possible trick even in our Zone 6b gardens if the tubers are situated well below the frost line in a perfectly drained location (even if the main tuber rots during a severe extended winter, numerous bulbiles usually survive to sprout the following summer)..

65630 VELTHEIMIA CAPENSIS LIL CGH PRICE: $ 7.25 Fleshy leaved "Cape Cowslip" with stout spikes of tubular pink flowers tipped green emerge from the art noveau rosette of rich toned fleshy leaves, richly undulate along the margins; best let go summer dormant to insure the showy winter blossoms.

30437 XANTHOSOMA ATROVIRENS VARIEGATUM MONSTROSUM ARAC TGH PRICE: $ 28.00 "Mouse Cup" "Pocket Plant" Incredibly grotesque bluegreen arrowhead leaves, splashed with white and heavily ridged, are fused at the tip into pockets sporting long surreal tails. Only dormant if temperatures are chill in your winter greenhouse. Likes wet feet during the growth periods.

30444 XANTHOSOMA JACQUINII LINEATUM ARAC TGH CGH PRICE: $ 12.50 Crested leaves with whitish striations raised above the arrowhead leaves' surface; unexpectedly easy to grow as is vigorous as any of its similar cousin Colocasias. Very odd 'Monstrose Elephant Ear.' So very complex, so very over the top. So imperative to add to your collection.

30439 XANTHOSOMA LINDENII MAGNIFICUM ARAC TGH HP PRICE: $ 17.50 Very handsome soft green "Aztec Arrowhead" foliage with dramatic wide ivory veins. Needs warm conditions; grows best in a large wardian case or over a pebble tray. Always one of our most sought after plants.

30440 XANTHOSOMA VIOLACEUM ARAC TGH HP PRICE: $ 12.00 "Blue Taro" Purple stems arch into swooping arrowhead leaves of dusky violet darkening to a rich purple toward the margins; this semi-aquatic "Blue Ape" must have warm winter conditions to maintain evergreen foliage; easiest to grow as a semi-aquatic in summer (but very successful as a container companion plant or even planted in a bed with some perfect color companion like 'Lime Zinger'): then store like a dormant "Elephant Ear" during the winter. And like all Colocasias and Xanthosomas, most successfully stored by leaving them in their containers so that their ever so slightly moist undisturbed potting mix is around them all winter to prevent drying out and rot. Nonetheless, reliably evergreen [everpurple] in your winter greenhouse or warm plantroom.

30446 ZAMIOCULCAS LANCEOLATA ARAC HP TGH PRICE: $ 8.00 "Aroid Palm" Very thick purpled petioles hold ranks of waxy succulent leaves on outarched thick succulent stems arising from a tuberous root. This elegant plant, now heavily marketed as the "ZZ Palm" is one of the few purely desert aroids. Beware that the leaflets typically shatter when shipped--just tuck them into a rooting mix and each will form a plantlet.

31252ZANTEDESCHIA AETHIOPICA IVORYARAC CGH PRICE: $ 4.50 Fleshy rich green foliage perfect for the large ivory white "Calla Lily" blossoms; best performance in the cool winter greenhouse with ample sun; nonetheless, our customers often grow it in a moist to boggish location in full sun outdoors during the summer and it blooms! Some plants will simply not read the text books (alone read my meandering pronouncements) . . .

30781 ZANTEDESCHIA ROSE GEM ARAC CGG PRICE: $ 7.50 "Purple Calla" Unusual lavender rose spathes; considered a good container subject if kept evenly moist; seems to thrive both as a summer bog subject and as a winter greenhouse bloomer--you set up the cycle you prefer.

51120 ZEPHYRANTHES [ARGYROPSIS] CANDIDA AMARY CGH HP PRICE: $ 4.00 Blunt edged succulent rushlike foliage packed over the nearly surface offsetting bulbs; with full sun and good fertilizer will produce cycles of white flowers (sometimes triggered by a dry cycle followed by heavy pseudo rain). Seed collected in Rio Uruguay, San Javier, Uruguay.

51081 ZEPHYRANTHES GRANDIFLORA AMARY CGH HP PRICE: $ 4.50 Mexican "Zephyr-lily" Rich pink funnel flowers often appear after a rain, thus "Pink Storm Lily." Short grassy foliage on quickly offsetting bulbs near the soil surface; thus perfect in a clay azalea style pot, blooming more freely once the roots become crowded. Give full sun. Winter hardy in the deep South where the bulbs are well below any frost line.

56544 ZINGIBER MIDNIGHT ZIN TGH HP PRICE: $ 6.50 Marvelous "Black Ginger" with arched stems winged with glossy maroon overlapping leaves; the lovely blossoms open creamy yellow gradually changing to peachy apricot. Wonderful color in any plant combination, or as a solo pot plant. If the roots are slightly chilled, or if (not that this could happen) watering schedules are missed, this small ginger will drop its foliage; but never fear for a new fresh set of stems will emerge from the undersoil bulb/tuber and the color will be better than ever.

53042 ZINGIBER ZERUMBET DARCEYI ZIN TGH HP PRICE: $15.00 "Variegated Bitter Ginger" Brilliant white bordered leaves with occassional white bands; turns pink in full light. A winter dormant species from India. As the underground tuber gaines mass as it matures, it will produce its showy flower spike as the new foliage emerges in the spring. Please do not tell us in the Fall that your plant has died. It goes dormant in its native monsoonal climate and it will maintain that cycle no matter what.
